COVID-19 Rapid Testing FAQ

Q: How does the COVID-19 rapid test process work at AFC?

A: Getting your rapid test is a 2 step process:

Registration

  1. Schedule a TeleMed video appointment, on our website  by selecting the Rapid TeleMed Appointment link.   Select date and time for your TeleMed appointment.  Please note if the date is not highlighted then there are no available times for that specific day. Do not make another appointment for the rapid test – we will make an appointment for you after your TeleMed appointment
  2. Please complete the registration process by answering the questions completely, upload your insurance and ID and sign the consent forms. (we recommend using your phone for ease of uploading your information.)  Once you have completed the registration you will get a confirmation text that you have successfully completed the process.

Please do not come into the center for your TeleMed appointment   On the day of your TeleMed appointment, our staff will contact you to verify information and triage. Once the provider is ready for the appointment,  a link will be sent via text message where you can join the video call.   (we suggest you make sure you have a good wifi connection so that you can join without difficulty)

At the conclusion of your TeleMed visit our staff will set an appointment for the rapid test the following day or next available appointment.

Q:  What if my family or more than 1 person needs a rapid test?

A:  You must register an appointment for each family member who needs a rapid test so we can register it  in our system separately. We can do 1 TeleMed call for the family or household members who are together.

Q: I would like to have my rapid test on a specific day. Is that possible?

A: Schedule your TeleMed the day before or a few days before you would like to be tested.

Q:  Why are there limited time slots?

A:  We have a limited supply of rapid tests in each center which is why we have limited the number of tests scheduled for the day.  *Also we do not schedule any appointments on Sundays.

Q: I am traveling and need my results asap!

A:  Please check with the airline you are traveling or the country you are traveling to ensure the Abbott ID Now is an accepted form of testing

Q:  How much does rapid testing cost?

A:  Currently your insurance carrier is covering the cost of testing

Q: What if I do not have insurance?

A:  AFC Urgent Care participates in a federal program to cover the cost of testing.  You must truly be uninsured or not be covered under another policy to qualify.   You will be asked to provide your social security number and a government issued ID (i.e. Drivers License, Passport etc)

Q:  Can I pay out of pocket?

A:  Yes you can.  Please call the center and we can take care of you immediately

Q: How does the Rapid Test work?

A: We have partnered with Abbott Labs using their ID Now diagnostic system, the Gold Standard in rapid testing utilized by the federal government. Abbott Labs is a leading FDA approved laboratory, with emergency use authorization from the FDA to administer the COVID-19 Rapid test. The ID NOW is a lightweight and portable instrument (the size of a toaster),  a molecular test which detects genetic material, and allows testing to occur on site in order to get rapid results. The ID NOW system processes a specimen in 15 minutes, which enables us to get you your results delivered to you within 30 minutes

Q:  What do I do on the day of testing?

A:  Please text or call the center from your car to inform us of your arrival at your designated time.   A member of our team will contact you and direct you to the area that we perform the rapid testing.   Once the sample is collected you will be directed to wait in your vehicle until the test is complete.   Once the results are available our staff will either call you to retrieve your results or come out to meet you with them in your car.

Q: Is this a nasopharyngeal swab test?

A: Yes. It is a non-invasive sample taken from the lower area of the nasal canal and we are as gentle as possible!

Q: How long will it take to get results?

A:  You won’t have to wait long for results. You’re welcome to wait right in your car where a member of our staff will come to you with your lab results and your report and answer any remaining questions you may have within 30 minutes.

Q: How effective are the results of the rapid test?

A: The Abbott ID Now is the gold standard of rapid testing utilized by the federal government, the airline industry and many institutions.  The detailed information can be found here.

Q: Do I need to be displaying symptoms in order to get a rapid test?

A:  No, you do not need to be displaying symptoms in order to be tested or to get accurate results.

Q: If I get the rapid test do I still need to wear a mask, wash hands often and social distance?

A: A negative result is not a free get out of jail card, and does not discount you from maintaining safety precautions, as the test results are only effective up until the time of testing. Please continue to take normal precautions following the test and follow the CDC guidelines

Q: Are these COVID-19 rapid tests sufficient to use as proof of a negative test for employers?

A: Many employers have backed the Abbott ID Now as the system of choice but we recommend checking with your employer or agency.
